Delegate of the Week

Chris Hernandez
University of Central Florida

Chris Hernandez always had a passion for math and science, but it wasn’t until he learned about circuits in a high school physics class that his interest in electrical engineering began to develop. As he continued his education, he became increasingly fascinated with renewable energy and eliminating carbon emissions from electrical power sources. Now an undergraduate student at the University of Central Florida (UCF), he is pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering and plans to graduate in August of 2020.

As a first-generation college student, Chris first felt unsure about his education, “Being the first person in my family to attend college, I was nervous entering a new chapter in my life with no real knowledge on what to expect.” Fortunately, at UCF, he found a welcoming community that fostered both his academic and professional growth. Chris compares the support network he found to “a familia where everyone is ready to help you reach your potential.” In 2015 he joined his school’s SHPE chapter and has since served as both RLDC Curriculum chair and Outreach chair.

Through his campus activities, Chris learned about Great Minds in STEM (GMiS) and was provided a travel award to attend the 2016 GMiS Conference. He explains, “I enjoyed my time and gained valuable experience that became the catalyst for me being able to land three internships during my college career.” Since the Conference, Chris has completed two internships at Exelon Generation and worked as an Electrical Engineering Associate at Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems Americas, Inc. In these positions, he was assigned a variety of projects, such as designing cost-effective circuitry, supervising safety upgrades, and even organizing volunteer events for the North American Young Generation in Nuclear Organization.

Appreciative of the opportunities he found through GMiS, Chris has now served as a GMiS College Captain for two years. In this role, he worked at multiple Viva Tech programs in central Florida before being selected as a GMiS Delegate in 2019. Through his involvement as a College Captain and a Delegate, Chris has helped provide a younger generation of students with STEM-based activities and opportunities to learn about career options available in STEM fields. Great Minds in STEM would like to thank Chris for all his amazing work and proudly recognizes him as Delegate of the Week.
