In 2012, GMiS reached over 62,700 K-12 students, teachers and parents through its National Viva Technology Program™, National STEM Awareness Programs (BPA for Federal Agencies), STEM Showdown™, STEM-Up Initiative™ in Boyle Heights and the K-12 Educators’ Institute.
- Viva Technology™ – From half day assemblies to an all day student event. This national, school-based, STEM awareness program engages underserved K-12 students, teachers and parents through culturally-relevant, active-leaning, hand-on activities and competitions intent to stimulate interest in STEM careers.
- STEM Showdown™ – This day-long event places teams of high school juniors, seniors and college students in a collaborative competition on STEM career awareness. Parents and teachers participate in concurrent workshops regarding college access, financial aid, and current issues in STEM innovation and teaching.
- STEM Up™ – This transformative initiative, is a community-based approach, that provides STEM services to students, parents and educators in the 92,000 residential community of Boyle Heights, in East Los Angeles, with varying opportunities to help them opt-into STEM.
GMiS provides competitive, merit-based scholarships to Hispanic and underserved undergraduate and graduate students, who hold a minimum 3.0 GPA and are pursuing a STEM degree, at an accredited higher education institution in the United States or Puerto Rico. Scholarships currently range from $500 - $10,000 depending on requirements set by individual sponsors.
GMiS provides competitive travel grants to the annual HENAAC Conference, for college students, who are selected as HENAAC Scholars, Technical Posters and Papers Competition finalists, HENAAC College BowlTM participants, or Protégé Mentorship Program mentees. Travel grants cover the cost of travel, meals and lodging.
HENAAC Awards & Hall of Fame
The HENAAC Awards and Hall of Fame honor the nation’s top STEM technical talent in industry, academe, military and government. These individuals are recognized at the annual HENAAC Conference, which convenes over 2,000 STEM executives, professionals, academic administrators and faculty, college students and K-12 students, for an array of academic and career development events.
