Martha Garcia-Wegener
Rockwell Collins

A lifelong learner, Martha is currently pursuing a master’s in business administration from the University of Iowa.

Martha Garcia-Wegener is a Systems Engineer, Flight Management Systems Aircraft performance at Rockwell Collins. Martha began her career with Rockwell Collins, in 2006, as a mechanical engineer, in the Environmental Effects Engineering test lab. Throughout the years, her ability to lead projects allowed her to take on positions of increased complexity and responsibility. Martha recently transitioned to Systems Engineering, where she is responsible for executing subsystem tests to aid the team with on-time delivery of Flight Management System software.

Martha and her family immigrated to the United States from Mexico when she was six years old. The eldest of four children, Martha is a natural leader with the ability to adapt to her surroundings, learn from her experiences, and strive for perfection. Martha loved math and science classes and when given the opportunity, she took a science and technology exploration class which taught her about manufacturing, robotics and electronics. At the same time, while working in her family’s restaurant, one of the regular patrons, an electrical engineer, would help to explain career opportunities in engineering. STEM activities in high school and her participation in a School-To-Work program that would give her real world experience, cemented her decision to become an engineer.

Martha was the first in her family to graduate from college, earning her bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from Iowa State University. After graduation, she began her career at Rockwell Collins in 2006 as a mechanical engineer in the Environmental Effects Engineering test lab. Martha’s demonstrated excellence in her work, and her ability to lead projects has allowed her to take on positions of increased complexity and responsibility. In 2012, Martha transitioned from a mechanical engineering to a systems engineering role. The systems engineering role has allowed her to learn and apply project engineering skills. She is enjoying the challenges of a new job and looking forward to seeing what other opportunities become available.

Martha is actively involved with STEM outreach activities both within Rockwell Collins and the Cedar Rapids community. She not only helps the company recruit and retain diverse and talented people, Martha has become the role model and mentor that other engineers were to her. One to always demonstrate leadership, she is involved in several organizations. She was the president of the Rockwell Collins Latino Employee Network, and she is currently a Rockwell Collins Diversity Programs Liaison to the University of Iowa where she is responsible for all of the diversity related activities with the university.
