Scholar of the Week



Alberto Magana      
University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign




Alberto Magana is a junior studying civil and environmental engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He is a recipient of the 2014 HENAAC/Najera Consulting Group, Inc. scholarship.

Alberto has a clear goal set for himself and has the right perseverance to achieve that goal. Upon admittance to the university, Alberto was accepted to the college of Division of General Studies. He had to prove himself academically to enter the College of Engineering. By the end of his freshmen year, he earned a 3.61 GPA, was invite to join Phi Eta Sigma, and more importantly accepted into the civil engineering program. He is currently a James Scholar and has been placed on the deans list.

He is a member of the Society of Hispanic Engineers (SHPE) Community Service Committee where he helps to fundraise for charities. He is also a member of the Structural Engineers Association (SEA) Professional Events Committee where he assists in coordinating professor luncheons, project visits, job shadows, and events for the association. He also is part of the Bridge to China organization, where one of the projects was to design a new school and bridge for a rural community in China and design and build a bridge in a community park called Allerton Park.

Through all this, Alberto has developed a deep interest in East Asian history and customs. To the extent that he took two and half semesters of Chinese in high school and one semester in college. He is fluent in Mandarin as the beginning speaker.

Alberto is described as conscientious about making a positive impact to himself, his family, and community. A genuine, thoughtful, and hard working student, Alberto is on his way to become a world-class engineer.
