Scholar of the Week

Amirr Neal
Cal State L.A.

From a young age, Amirr Neal had a strong interest in engineering and a knack for problem-solving. In 2018, Great Minds in STEM recognized Amirr as an Outstanding Graduate Student Leader for his efforts to recruit more minority students into STEM programs and for being an exemplary role model. He is currently a graduate student at California State University, Los Angeles and is the recipient of a 2018 scholarship from Chevron Corporation.

Early in his childhood, Amirr’s parents recognized his tendency to tinker with objects and encouraged him to learn about the engineering behind basic household items. This interest would eventually shape Amirr’s academic career. He completed his undergraduate studies at the University of California, Riverside, where he obtained a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering. While attending UC Riverside, Amirr was awarded the Bourns College of Engineering HSI Undergraduate Research Award for his studies in determining the effectiveness of optical clearing agents in improving non-invasive imaging. Amirr would later attend Cal State LA, where graduated with a master's degree in mechanical engineering.

Currently, Amirr is pursuing his doctoral studies at Cal State LA. After completing his Ph.D. in material science engineering, he hopes to one day own a business that uses advanced engineering to solve practical, everyday problems. Amirr is particularly interested in manufacturing vehicles that use alternative forms of energy to operate.

Throughout his academic career, Amirr has made an exceptional effort to help other students pursuing STEM careers. As an executive board leader for SHPE, he helped organize events that encouraged Hispanic students to become engaged in STEM programs. Over the years he has mentored elementary school, middle school, and high school students who fall into minority groups. Amirr notes that the work he does is rewarding because the students he helps will go on to be important leaders in the STEM community.

As a result of his hard work and dedication, Amirr has become an inspiration and a role model for aspiring STEM students across the country, and Great Minds in STEM is proud to recognize him as Scholar of the Week.
