Arnold Cespedes
Virginia Tech

Arnold Cespedes is a junior computer engineering student at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech).  He is the recipient of a $2,000 HENAAC Scholarship sponsored by EMC2 Corporation.

A transfer from George Mason University, Virginia Tech is providing him an education where he has learned how to analyze, solve, and design tedious circuits and explained how they were constructed.  In his first semester at Virginia Tech he earned distinction on the Deans List.

Arnold is ingenious in financing his college education.  Since 2012 he has been self-employed with an online sales business where he purchased items from auctions/garage sales/estates and then sold them on eBay     .

This ingenuity has transferred to over to his engineering projects.  One of his projects was to design a Mailbox Alert System. His responsibility was to design the schematic and aid with code to send ‘alert’ via Raspberry Pi.  In another project, he designed a sensor with a scenario.  He helped in the development of a sensor installed with a buzzer and was responsible for testing the sensor range and consistency.

Outside the classroom, Arnold is a member of the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers and has also engaged himself in a Learning Conversation Program from the Learning Institute where he is partnered with a student who is learning English as a second language and talks and engages with them.

According to Arnord, “With a great education, representing a different culture, professional aspiration, and one’s service, a STEM leader can emerge to the change in the global market.”   With these four points; Arnold is well on his way to meet the criteria and skills needed to perform and succeed in his chosen field of study.
