Scholar of the Week



Brianna Morales      
University of Texas at San Antonio




Brianna Morales is a freshman at the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) pursuing a biomedical engineering degree.  A graduate of Smithson Valley High School, with a GPA of 3.75, she is one of the Class of 2014 U.S. Navy STEM Scholarship recipients.  This is a $10,000 merit-based scholarship awarded in partnership with NAVSEA/SSP, to a qualified graduating high school senior intending to pursue a STEM degree at a Hispanic-Serving Institution.  

Brianna is highly motivated to excel. She is never satisfied with mediocrity, and strives for improvement at all times.  In fact, her senior year, she took six AP courses. She earned admittance into the 3400 Club in her senior year.  The 3400/3800 Club inducts students, who achieved at least 3400 on their Exit Level Math TAKS combined with their SAT Critical Reading and Math scores.   This past fall semester, her determination earned her a perfect 4.00 GPA during her first semester at UTSA. 

Brianna aspires to pursue some type of career in medicine.  In high school, she was an integral part of the sports medicine program.  As a Varsity student trainer, she gained valuable experience in dealing with emergency situations. For her outstanding work as a student trainer, she received Academic All-District all four years, and Academic All-State senior year as a Student Trainer.

In her spare time, Brianna has committed hundreds of community service hours. Through the National Honor Society, she participated in Highway Cleanup, Paper Recycling, and Relay for Life, Habitat for Humanity, the San Antonio Fire Department Toy Drive & Toy Wrap, and finally The 30 Hour Famine through the nonprofit organization, World Vision.  Her community service earned her a service cord.

Described as diligent, proactive, approachable, humble, and confident, by her peers and teacher, Brianna is off to a great start as a future biomedical engineer.
