Scholar of the Week

Darlene Aguilar
California State University, Los Angeles

Darlene Aguilar, a junior biochemistry student at California State University, Los Angeles (CSULA) is the recipient of a 2012 HENAAC-Victoria Alegria Tracy Memorial Scholarship. She was among six students receiving a $2500 scholarship on behalf of Dr. John Tracy, a long-time supporter and friend of GMiS.

The Victoria Alegria Tracy Memorial Scholarship was established in honor of Dr. Tracy’s mother, Victoria, Mari Alegria Tracy, who had a passion for education and was always encouraging students to continue along in their studies, and persist through the challenges.

Darlene graduated from Schurr High School, with a perfect attendance record for 10 years! Her tenacity and dedication to her education continues to be evident in her college career.

While several of her biochemistry classmates have chosen to switch to non-STEM majors, and avoid the pressures and demands of a science curriculum, Darlene has persisted in her academics and even balances studies with a part-time job in the Office of the Vice President for Institutional Advancement and serves her community through the Educational Participation in Communities (EPIC) program.

For Darlene, religion has and continues to play an integral role in her life. It is through her church that she continues to receive support and motivation for her and her family. The first in her family to attend college, Darlene continues to be a role model not only to her two younger sisters but for all young women aspiring to pursue a STEM career.

Darlene aspires to use her degree to provide for her family, be a role model for her community, and open doors for young women to enter and persist in the sciences.
