Elia Garcia

Elia Garcia is a May 2017 graduating senior pursuing a biology degree at the University of Houston. A first-generation college student, she is a recipient of a $1,000 2015 Davila/Trevino Memorial Scholarship sponsored by David Davila and his families.

Due to financial reasons, Elia began her college journey at a community college - San Jacinto Community College, where because of her high achievements in high school was offered both T-STEM and L-SAMP scholarships. When she transferred to the University of Houston in Spring 2015, after receiving her associates degree, the L-SAMP program continued to provide her scholarship support. This program is providing her the opportunity to be a co-facilitator for Chemistry and Calculus 2 courses as well as a research assistant internship. While at San Jacinto Community College, she had the opportunity to be a Biology 1, College Algebra and Pre Calculus tutor at their Tutoring Center.

Outside of her academics, Elia volunteered at the Houston Arboretum and Nature Center in the summer of 2011. The summer of 2014, she began volunteering at Memorial Hermann Southeast Hospital. Her roles included being a Nursing Aid supporting the nursing stations and as a Volunteer Office Assistant supporting the office in managing volunteers for the hospital.

Characterized by her peers as optimistic, intelligent, hardworking, disciplined and incredibility determined, Elia aspires to pursue an advanced degree in neuroscience and cellular-molecular biology and join the ranks of those scientists making new discoveries. With a passion for the biological sciences, Elia is well underway of reaching her career goals.
