Scholar of the Week

Erik Sanchez
California State Polytechnic University of Pomona

Erik Sanchez, a senior civil engineering student at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona is the recipient of a 2012 HENAAC-Southern California Edison Scholarship. He was among five students receiving an $850 scholarship.

A member of Engineers Without Borders and Alpha Lambda Delta, Erik is also pursuing a minor in math. This has served him well as he is a senior tutor at the Santa Ana Public Library TeenSpace. Since the summer of 2011, Erik has worked in this capacity mentoring and tutoring teenagers to pursue college and STEM.

Erik has led several interesting projects as part of his work with the TeenSpace. One prominent project was directing the development of the lead float for the Santa Anna Fiestas Patrias Parade. He led a group of teens in budget development, scaling-up from a model design, and guiding the teens in problem-solving design challenges. Another interesting project he helped lead was the design of a haunted house for the community. Erik applied his civil engineering skills in considering structural and safety elements.

Working in the public library has given Erik the opportunity to see the needs of the community. These needs include access to technology, as simple as providing basic Internet access and knowledge skills in navigating the Internet to access information, as basic as voting rights information. Erik aspires to one day be able to contribute to his community, on a larger scale, the opportunities for greater knowledge access.
