Scholar of the Week

Erik Sanchez
Cal Poly Pomona

Erik Sanchez, a fourth year civil engineering student with a minor in mathematics at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona (Cal Poly Pomona), maintains a 3.41 GPA in a highly competitive program. Erick volunteers with the Santa Ana Public Library TeenSpace, holds a local project chair position with Engineers Without Borders and manages to make time to positively impact his community and those in need through community projects. It is this character, which encouraged Dow Chemical to award Erik a $1,700 scholarship, as a 2013 HENAAC Scholar.

Since the summer of 2011, Erik has volunteered as a tutor with the Santa Ana Public Library TeenSpace. He has overseen and directed STEM related projects, and he has also mentored teenagers in math, science, and college preparation. Volunteering with TeenSpace has ignited a drive to better equip low-income communities with the resources needed to gain a jumpstart on a career in STEM.

Erik’s drive for providing better opportunities to low-income communities led him to the leadership position of local project chair with Engineers Without Borders at Cal Poly Pomona. With his civil engineering skills, he assisted in designing and constructing a clean water distribution system for Los Achiotes residents, in Honduras.

Erik’s professor speaks highly of his strength in understanding, “that excellent performance isn’t just about one’s technical knowledge; it’s about technical competence and excellent work ethics.” Indeed, Erik’s volunteer experience and practical engineering knowledge has heightened his confidence. Erik aspires to continue applying his learned knowledge to community projects enroute to achieving a doctorate degree.
