Scholar of the Week

Hector Hernandez
University of Oklahoma

Hector is a junior pursuing his degree in Petroleum Engineering at the University of Oklahoma. He is the recipient of the Ann Seki Memorial Scholarship, sponsored by Chevron.

Hector’s parents, immigrants from Mexico, are college graduates and very strong influences in his life to attend and complete college. Both Hector’s mother and father worked tirelessly to complete college themselves despite tremendous challenges and skeptics who told them they were wasting both their time and money. They had the foresight to realize that completing college would provide a better life for their family and so they instilled in Hector at a very early age, the importance of hard work and determination to set and accomplish his goals. Always ready to provide support, his family worked closely with Hector and his teachers to ensure he was doing his best to be a successful student.

Hector grew up in a predominantly Hispanic area where students either accepted the lives they were living with no desire to improve their situation or students who wanted to excel and make something more of their lives. Being the latter, Hector joined a Collegiate Challenge group the summer after his junior year of high school. The program pair’s students with an adult mentor tasked to help them achieve their goals of attending a four- year university, as well as securing various scholarships. Before the end of the first week of his senior year, Hector had completed all of his college applications.

As an active member of the College of Engineering program at the University of Oklahoma, Hector was selected to work as a summer intern with Corrpro Companies, Inc in Wyoming. He was one of very few freshman engineering students to have received an internship. Hector is also an active member of the OU Chapter of the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) and a President’s Community Scholar. Hector is a dedicated student and has maintained an admirable GPA in the rigorous courses of the Mewbourne College of Earth and Energy at The University of Oklahoma.

With strong leadership skills and focused motivation, Hector aspires to graduate from the University of Oklahoma with a degree in Petroleum Engineering and enter the workforce in the petroleum industry. Hector then plans to attend law school someday and specialize in energy law.

Hector is an ambitious, driven and determined role model and a clear choice as a Class of 2015 HENAAC Scholar.
