Jaylene Martinez
University of New Mexico

Jaylene Martinez is in her freshman year at the University of New Mexico where she is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in mathematics with a minor in chemistry.

Jaylene graduated from Penasco High School located in the small town of Penasco, New Mexico. Jaylene was a dedicated high school student with exemplary grades, graduated with a 3.9 grade point average and was ranked second in her class. Entering her senior year, Jaylene had already met the Penasco High School graduation requirements so she attended only half-time. Not satisfied with the variety of courses offered, she enrolled at the University of New Mexico. She demonstrated the determination required to attend post secondary school and succeed.

Jaylene also demonstrated her leadership abilities. She served as class president her junior and senior years. As president, she was able to work with peers to resolve issues in a fair and democratic manner. She was a member of the National Honor Society - an inductee in her sophomore year, vice president in her junior year and president in her senior year. A member of the Technology Student Association (TSA) she and other senior members were responsible for mentoring new members. Her responsibilities included partnering for competition and ensuring that new members would succeed. She attended TSA state competitions her sophomore and junior years and qualified for the national competition.

As a high school student, Jaylene was also active in her community. Understanding the need for a fire department in her small town, she was an integral participant in a committee that fundraised and ultimately established the department.

Upon completion of her degree, Jaylene hopes to get a job that will give her the opportunity to continue helping people in her community.

Jaylene is a 2012 HENAAC-NAVSEA/SPAWAR scholarship recipient.
