Scholar of the Week

Luz Mascorro Ramirez
University of California, Merced
The Boeing Company

To Luz Mascorro Ramirez, the best way to inspire others to succeed is by example. For her desire to motivate and inspire others with her accomplishments and promotion of minority communities, Luz was awarded the Boeing Scholarship presented Great Minds in STEM (GMiS) at the 2019 Conference. Currently pursuing a Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering at the University of California, Merced, Luz is set to graduate in May 2022.

Luz’s strength of character is drawn from her parents, who both immigrated from Mexico to the United States in search of a better life. With limited elementary education, Luz’s parents only found demanding physical work and labored through multiple jobs to provide for their children. They faced additional challenges due to the mental health condition of a family member. During difficult financial times, Luz emotionally supported her mother and sister, and reflects on how these times shaped her as a person, sharing, “It hasn’t been easy but these experiences have helped me develop (resilience) qualities that not everyone has.”

Luz’s academic journey began when she was able to attend the Preuss School UC San Diego, a transformative high school designed to elevate students from low-income families. Though it was an hour and a half long bus drive away, Luz capitalized on what the school had to offer, gaining valuable professional experience while interning at the SBP Medical Discovery Institute, the UCSD Early Childhood Development Center, and the UCSD iDASH Program. Excelling in her courses, Luz had an aptitude for math and science and developed a desire for a career in aviation engineering through exposure at the San Diego Airport.

Initially unsure about the difficulty of an engineering degree, Luz recognized that if she wanted to be the first in her family to attend college, she would have to earn it. Through her hard work and diligent study, Luz was admitted to the University of California, Merced (UCM), where she applied the skills she developed during her high school years to work, achieving the Dean’s Honor Roll for multiple consecutive semesters. At UCM, Luz continues her efforts to advancing minority representation in STEM and joined her University’s chapters of SHPE and Ingenieros Unidos.

Luz continues her work towards breaking stereotypes about Hispanics pursuing STEM degrees, sharing “Having good time management and an outstanding work ethic has helped open up doors for myself and prove to Hispanic kids around me that it is possible to further your education, regardless of your background.” Currently, Luz is poised to make a great leap in her career and join the Boeing Company as a Product Engineer Intern in June. For her perseverance and success to inspire others in the Hispanic community, GMiS eagerly awaits Luz’s bright future and is proud to recognize her as Scholar of the Week.
