Scholar of the Week

Manuel Losada
Florida International University

Manuel Losada understands the importance of creating a strong sense of community and the critical value of having great leadership. His commitment to become a great role model for younger students by proactively pursuing different leadership opportunities is the reason Great Minds in STEM recognized Manuel as an Outstanding Undergraduate Student Leader at the 2019 GMiS Conference. In addition, Manuel is the proud recipient of 2019 Lockheed Martin Scholarship. He is currently enrolled in the Electrical Engineering program at Florida International University and plans to graduate in May of 2020.

Manuel’s passion and commitment to help the next generation is based on his own personal experiences and upbringing. The son of political refugees from Cuba, he embraces their hardships as motivation for overcoming any challenge he encounters. A natural problem solver, Manuel seeks out resources that help him strategize in difficult situations. He spends time studying the biographies of noted leaders, such as Elon Musk, Steve Jobs, and Jeff Bezos. In addition, attending FIU has provided Manuel an environment that nurtures the growth and development of prominent future influencers for the STEM community.

Soon after beginning classes at FIU, Manuel became involved in the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), a student organization which specializes in technical workshops, outreach programs, and yearly engineering projects. Now serving as Branch Chair of IEEE, Manuel explains the group’s role in local student activities, “My peers and I are fully dedicated to our community and helping those around us reach their maximum potential as engineers. We promote STEM to our young engineers in grade school in order to secure our legacy and expand the community.”

In addition to his community service, Manuel is performing undergraduate research for the Applied Science Center at FIU where he is developing cost-effective robotic tools to aid in inspection of high radiation environments. Manuel hopes to provide safer ways to detect and manage radioactive materials in order to keep workers away from high radiation areas.

As a speaker at the 2019 GMiS Conference, Manuel shared his story and his goals for the future. His main priority is to continue his student outreach efforts to get younger generations more involved in STEM programs. Great Minds in STEM proudly recognizes Manuel as both an Outstanding Undergraduate Student Leader and as Scholar of the Week.
