Scholar of the Week



Maribel Torres Velazquez      
University of Puerto Rico-Mayaguez




With a 3.73 G.P.A., Maribel Velazquez is a junior at the University of Puerto Rico-Mayaguez (UPRM) majoring in electrical engineering. She was one of six recipients awarded a $2,125 scholarship from Verizon.

Understanding the need for improved child education, Maribel has taken the initiative to begin making an impact on students’ lives. She has taken marketing and support leadership positions through the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) and the American Meteorological Society (AMS). In her marketing role, she develops strategies to increase attendance at SHPE activities. This will expand the number of students developing professional skills to utilize in their future STEM careers. With AMS, she organizes activities to span knowledge on meteorological phenomenon and increase fundamental knowledge in this area.

With a passion for helping others, Maribel is also the Fundraising Activities Coordinator for the American Cancer Society. She is responsible for developing innovative fundraising activities to increase participation and have greater fundraising outcomes. She also coordinates hospital visits to open doors to those interested in STEM careers.

With her STEM career, she wishes to make an impact in underprivileged communities by exposing them to professional skills and working side by side with those communities. Whether outreaching to communities locally or globally, she is dedicated to working with associations to make a difference in the lives of underserved communities. After all, the children of today’s communities are the professionals of the future.
