Scholar of the Week

Maximilian Adang
California Institute of Technology
Scholarship Sponsored by The Boeing Company

Maximilian Adang has combined his love of STEM with his volunteer work to help address challenges in his community. His initiative, paired with his excellent academic performance, led to his recognition as a Great Minds in STEM (GMiS) Scholar and recipient of a 2019 Boeing Scholarship. Maximilian is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering at the California Institute of Technology (CalTech).

While attending BASIS Charter High School in Tuscon, Arizona, Maximilian realized he needed to be involved and help his community. As a member of the National Honors Society, he often helped with food and clothing drives, school beautification events, and mentorship projects. Through his school’s Relay for Life Club, he organized fundraising events and helped distribute educational materials for the American Cancer Society. Outside of school, Maximilian volunteered at both the Ronald McDonald House Foundation and at the Climbers Association of Southern Arizona, where he helped with cleanup initiatives on local hiking trails. “Thinking about the issues the world faces and how they can be solved inspired me to start volunteering in my community,” says Maximilian, who has been described by one of his teachers as a born philosopher and sci-fi enthusiast.

In addition to his volunteer work, Maximilian has always looked for opportunities to explore the STEM fields. In 2017, his team won the four-week Junior Shark Tank Engineering and Entrepreneurship Competition, in which he created a device to deter distracted driving. During his high school senior year, Maximilian completed a KEYS Research Internship at the University of Arizona, in which he worked in a professional laboratory designing tests for noninvasive medical imaging. He remarks on his experience as an intern, “This allowed me to use the subjects I had been learning about in school to help develop technology to help people!”

As a freshman at CalTech, he continues to grow as a scientist and a leader in the STEM community. He notes, “Seeing the end results of my work as a researcher helping the greater community is what inspires me to continue pursuing a future as a STEM professional and collaborate with others to make the world a better place.” Great Minds in STEM would like to thank Maximilian for his outstanding outreach efforts and proudly recognizes him as Scholar of the Week.
