Reina Villanueva
Cal Poly Pomona

Reina Villanueva is an electrical engineering senior at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona (Cal Poly Pomona). Reina was one of five Class of 2012 HENAAC Scholars receiving a $2,550 scholarship from the Northrop Grumman Corporation.

Reina encountered obstacles on her path to obtaining her engineering degree, but with her passion and enthusiasm for education she has excelled in her academics by being on the Dean’s List for several quarters. She has been able to accomplish her success from being a product of mentorship by getting internships every summer. During her first two years of college, she interned with Southern California Edison in the Information Technology department and with Lockheed Martin Corporation in the Aeronautics division. During her last years, she earned internships with Raytheon Space and Airborne Systems and Intel, Inc. The experience she gained from these thriving companies has given her an invaluable insight into the engineering world.

As a Hispanic female, Reina has experienced first-hand the crucial need for exposing young students to programs that bring awareness of various STEM careers and prepare them for the challenges therein. For this reason, Reina aspires to mentor students in her community and bring awareness of the various STEM fields. As a role model, she hopes to one day use her story to inspire students to pursue higher education in STEM.
