Scholar of the Week

Rosa E Morales
University of Colorado Boulder

Great Minds in STEM is proud to recognize Rosa E. Morales as the “Scholar of the Week” for her academic excellence and service to the community. She was awarded a 2018 scholarship from The Boeing Company and presented the Outstanding Graduate Student Leadership Award at the 2018 GMiS Conference. She is currently a graduate student at the University of Colorado Boulder.

Throughout her academic journey, Rosa has achieved many milestones. The first in her family to receive a bachelor’s degree, Rosa completed her undergraduate studies in Aerospace Science and Engineering at UC Davis. There she became involved with the SHPE/MAES chapter. As a student officer, she built a valuable support network and demonstrated her leadership skills within the community. Through her STEM outreach efforts, she identified important resources for the chapter, such as Great Minds in STEM.

While interning at a research and development laboratory in California, Rosa met other innovative thinkers and Latino role models who inspired her to pursue a graduate degree in Aerospace engineering. In addition to the brilliant minds she has worked with in her professional and academic endeavors, Rosa credits her inspiration to her loving and supporting family. She notes that her accomplishments would not have been possible if it were not for the hard work and dedication her parents put forth to provide her with a solid foundation and opportunities for a bright future.

During her speech at the 2018 GMiS Conference’s Student Leadership Awards, she shared her story and passion for serving the younger generation of STEM leaders. Knowing that she is paving the way for future generations, she strives to be an exceptional role model for her sister and her younger cousins.

Rosa is currently pursuing a PhD in Mechanical Engineering at CU Boulder. Even between writing her dissertation and conducting research at CU Boulder’s Laser-Based Ultrasonics Lab, she has continued her involvement in student affairs and outreach programs. Through her efforts, Rosa has become an outstanding leader in the STEM community.
