Scholar of the Week



Ruben Lopez      
University of Texas-Pan America




Ruben Lopez is a senior mechanical engineering student at the University of Texas-Pan American. He is one of 10 recipients of a $1,275 HENAAC-Cummins Scholarship. A very-well-rounded student and role-model, Ruben excels in his academics while balancing research, study abroad, and leadership.

Ruben has interned with Rolls-Royce Energy Systems, Inc. conducting research on after-market integrated solutions with gas turbine product upgrade. He is currently an undergraduate research assistant for the Partnership for Research and Education in Materials conducting nanotechnology research to produce cost-effective nanofibers.

In addition to his research and studies, Ruben found time to participate in a study abroad program to the Universidad de Salamanca in Salamanca, Spain.

He is a member of the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) where he has held several leadership positions including chair of VIVA Engineering 2012, treasurer, and external vice-president. His chapter has valued his active leadership and commitment to the organization.

His hard work has earned him several scholarships including the UTPA Lloyd M. Benton Jr. Engineering Scholarship, Sigma Lambda International Fraternity Scholarship, and also a past HENAAC Scholarship. Ruben has also been on the UTPA Dean’s List.

Ruben hopes that he is a role model to other students and continues as such through his professional engineering career. Ruben values the importance of education and looks to instill that knowledge value in future generations of scientists and engineers.
