Saul Chavez
Texas A&M University

A current freshman at Texas A&M University majoring in petroleum engineering, Saul Chavez’s hard work and dedication not only earned him a one-way ticket to one of the top ranking engineering schools in the country, as a Class of 2013 HENAAC Scholar, he also received a $500 scholarship sponsored by BP.

In school, math and science had always been great passions of Saul’s, and he regularly stretched his capacity by taking various Advanced Placement courses. By the time Saul graduated from Sunset High School, in Dallas, Texas, he had a 3.78 GPA.

Saul overcame much adversity as a child through high school, and he learned at an early age to take charge of his own life. Saul took up boxing to learn self-defense and self-confidence. He even participated in several afterschool activities and academic organizations, including the National Honor Society, the Key Club, and Medical Explorers, where he often organized community service events. Saul was also Vice President of the National Honor Society and the Art National Honor Society, Secretary of Green 152, and Golf Team Captain. Saul had a great commitment to his community and his education. Teachers believed that he was “a future leader.” It soon became evident that Saul wanted to find more ways to help his community.

Today, Saul is well on his way to obtain a petroleum engineering degree. His academic success and proven leadership skills are evidence that, given the opportunity, Saul will make a great impact on his community. He plans to use his higher education in STEM to develop ideas and services that can benefit his community and even the world.
