Scholar of the Week

Sharimar Colon
University of Puerto Rico – Mayaguez

Sharimar is a 2012 HENAAC-Lockheed Martin scholarship recipient.

Sharimar Colon Rodriguez is in her senior year at the University of Puerto Rico – Mayaguez (UPRM) Campus.  She is majoring in electrical engineering with an emphasis on control systems and renewable energy.

At UPRM Sharimar participated in an undergraduate research project titled “Increasing the Resiliency of the Puerto Rico’s Power Electric Grid using Renewable Energy”.  The main focus of this project was the integration of theory and energy sciences based on the electric reality of Puerto Rico.  With this project Sharimar had the opportunity to interact and learn with graduate students who were doing their master thesis in the area of renewable energy systems.  Shairmar explored new tools and software including SABER and Mathematica to stimulate the effects of the disaster conditions in power systems.  Her final report summarized the different types of renewable energy systems more suitable for applications in the Caribbean.  This work is part of an initiative of governmental agencies interested in the application of renewable energies in Puerto Rico.  Sharimar’s knowledge and interest in the areas of control systems and renewable energy make her an excellent future researcher in these areas.

Sharimar has been very involved with student organizations including the Tau Beta Pi Engineering Society providing tutorials and talks about how renewable energy could help in the development of low income communities.  She is also a member of Femprof and the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers.

Shairmar hopes that with the knowledge acquired in this area she can greatly contribute to the improvement of marginalized communities through education and create new technologies that benefit society.
