Great Minds in STEM (GMiS) is pleased to announce the launching of the GMiS California Medical Scholarship Program to provide financial assistance and support for underrepresented students pursuing medical professions in the state of California. GMiS will be awarding scholarships in honor of three outstanding individuals who believe(d) in enabling students to achieve their dreams of bettering the quality of human life, especially in the areas of mental health, rehabilitative and geriatric medicine, and individuals with disabilities.

In Honor of:

Dr. James A. Lemus Scholarship
Dr. Alfonso Paredes Scholarship
Mr. Artemio G. Navarro Scholarship


Student selected will receive a $5,000 scholarship. Up to ten (10) awards will be granted each year.


Interested students must complete the online application and provide appropriate supporting documentation no later than November 15, 2020, 11:59 PM PST.


Applicants to the GMiS California Medical Scholarship Program must:

  • Be a member of an underrepresented group in medicine as defined by the Association of American Medical Colleges.
  • Have earned a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited U.S. institution with a 3.0 Cumulative GPA or higher on a scale of 4.0
  • Be admitted and plan to enroll, for the 2019-20 academic year, as a first-year student at a medical school in one of the following universities:
    • University of California, Davis
    • University of California, Los Angeles
    • University of California, San Francisco
    • University of Southern California
  • Be pursuing a Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) degree
  • Be a U.S. Citizen, Permanent Resident, or Deferred Action for Childhood Arrival (DACA).
  • Preference will be given to applicants whose studies or volunteer efforts include mental health, rehabilitative and geriatric medical specialties, and individuals with disabilities.
  • Additional consideration will be given to those applicants who earned an undergraduate or graduate degrees in a STEM field of study.
  • Demonstrate volunteer time conducted within the past two years to the senior and/or individuals with disabilities communities, preference given to those demonstrating their efforts were focused on the underrepresented community.


Applicants to the GMiS California Medical Scholarship Program must be prepared to submit the following documents:

  • Current Resume (one-page limit)
  • Letter of Recommendation: This letter of support from a faculty, community member or peer is not required, but optional.
  • Personal Statement: In an essay (up to 700 words), please answer thoroughly the following three-part question. NOTE: Please be sure to address all three elements as a single essay, and not in three separate segments. You are encouraged to provide specific examples as needed.  
    • As a future medical professional, how have your life experiences (cultural, family, school, volunteerism, etc.) helped you to develop the skills and qualities that shape who you are today; and how have you applied those skills and qualities to serving the elderly or individuals with disabilities; and how have your life experiences defined your plans to achieve your medical career aspirations?
  • Official or Unofficial Undergraduate Transcript from the institution granting your undergraduate degree.
    • The cumulative GPA, weighted or unweighted, must appear on the transcript, otherwise the transcript will be considered invalid. GMiS does not calculate GPA's, The GPA must be reported by your institution.
    • Multi-page transcripts must be scanned and uploaded as one PDF document.
    • We will NOT accept photos of transcripts (i.e. jpg, gif or png). Transcripts must be scanned and the entire page(s) must be legible in one PDF document..
    • If your institution uses a clearinghouse to send transcripts, you must request that the transcript be emailed to you directly. Once you have received the transcript, you must print, scan and upload the transcript to your application.  
    • If you have requested a hard copy of your transcript, you may open your officially sealed transcript, scan and upload with your application.
    • All transcripts MUST BE UPLOADED onto the application portal as part of the application. Do not mail or email transcripts.
