Scholar of the Week

Daria Consuelo Bonds
California State University, San Marcos

Since an early age, Daria C. Bonds has hoped to one day lead by example, just like the exceptional role models that inspired her. Currently pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Applied Physics at the California State University, San Marcos (CSUSM), Daria was presented the Great Minds in STEM Founders’ Scholarship for her commitment to inspiring the next generation.

Daria’s love of science began in the third grade, when she attended a speech by Dr. Sally Ride at the San Diego Air and Space Museum, inspiring her to pursue a career in science. At Escondido High School in Oceanside, California, Daria’s scientific curiosity drove her to join many academic organizations, competing in the Robotics Club, and serving as an officer in the school’s Science Club and the California Scholarship Federation. In addition to achieving section leader roles in the school’s Marching and Concert Bands, Daria joined multiple sports teams, including soccer, track, and cross country, where she served as captain.

In pursuit of her hope to inspire others, Daria’s efforts were also focused on community outreach and involvement in her school, serving as President of the Gender Sexuality Alliance (GSA), as Vice President of the school’s Young Democrats Club, and as an Officer in the Movimiento Estudiantil Chicano/a de Aztlán( MEChA). Daria participated in the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) Camp, where she used her leadership skills for the service of others and eventually returned as an alumni coordinator. As a testament to her efforts, Daria received multiple school awards for her academic, athletic, and musical achievements, as well as her participation in extracurricular outreach programs.

Daria attended MiraCosta College in Fall 2018 and didn’t hesitate to immerse herself in any community outreach on campus. In addition to her membership in the College’s Soccer team, Daria supported fellow students in the Woman in Computer Science Program and the Latina Leadership Network. Daria tutored fellow students through both the Empowering Chicanx and Latinx to Explore Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (EChALE STEM) Program and the Umoja Community, an organization dedicated to enhancing the cultural and educational experiences of African American and other minority students.

With the words of Dr. Sally Ride guiding her, Daria looks to earn a Ph.D. in astrophysics, and uncover the mysteries of the cosmos for the benefit of humanity. As she pursues her academic career at California State University San Marcos, Daria works intently towards inspiring those to follow. For her outstanding achievements and commitment to serving her community, Great Minds in STEM is proud to recognize Daria as Scholar of the Week and awaits her bright future.
