Maria Gordon
Texas A&M University

Motivated by a strong passion and love for animals, Maria Gordon has set her sights on a career in veterinary medicine. Maria was inspired to join the U.S. Army ROTC Program by watching both of her parents serve in the Army. Additionally, her role in the Army presents new opportunities for pursuing her Veterinary career. For her dedication to her studies and accomplishments, Maria was recognized at the 2019 Great Minds in STEM Conference as a Cadet Honoree during the Future STEM Leaders Luncheon. She is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Sciences at Texas A&M University (A&M).

When she was young, Maria’s parents taught her the importance of hard work, dedication and perseverance. Having served 21 years in the U.S. Army themselves, their mentorship and guidance eventually inspired Maria to pursue a career in the Army. Growing up, this strong work ethic led her to volunteer at places like Texas Humane Heroes, a dog and cat adoption center in Killeen, TX. While working with the animals in the program, Maria’s interest in animal healthcare began to take shape.

After finishing high school, Maria completed her core courses at Central Texas College and transferred to Texas A&M University. At A&M, she developed an interest in the Texas A&M University Corps of Cadets and the school’s Army ROTC program. She later became involved in the school’s Pre-Vet Society and learned about opportunities to gain hands-on experience in veterinary medicine.

Utilizing her resources, Maria joined the university’s Veterinary Emergency Team as well as interned at the Winnie Carter Wildlife Center. In this position, she gained experience in meal preparation and feeding, cleaning and repairing of enclosures, and veterinary care of various species of non-domestic wildlife, including llamas, tortoises and emus. In 2016, Maria was selected for an internship position at Cameron Park Zoo in Waco, TX. where she tended to the overall welfare of animals, including special diet preparation and daily care.

Following in her parents’ footsteps, she plans to begin her career in the U.S. Army after graduating with her bachelor’s degree. Her dedication and passion for Veterinary Medicine have led her to become an outstanding example for other students. Great Minds in STEM proudly recognizes Maria as Scholar of the Week, and eagerly awaits her accomplishments as a U.S. Army Veterinarian Officer.
