Paulina Almada

Paulina Almada is in her sophomore year at the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) where she is majoring in mechanical engineering.

Paulina is presently carrying a 4.0 grade point average and is a member of the UTEP Honors Program, the Alpha Lambda Delta Honor Society and was on the College of Engineering Dean’s List for the Fall of 2011. In the classroom Paulina consistently demonstrates her eagerness to learn and contribute to the classroom learning environment with timely critical inquiry and outstanding peer leadership. Her high quality math assignments, attention to detail, innovative problem solving and high examination scores are testimony to her pursuit of excellence.

Paulina is an active member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) where has served as vice-president, the Society of Mexican American Engineers and Scientists (MAES) and the Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) Program. Through her membership in these organizations, she has become involved with her community by introducing students to the exciting possible STEM careers and encouraging them to complete their college education. She has served in the Gear Up Program, where she tutored students at El Paso High School in physics and mathematics; she was a judge in the El Paso Catholic Diocesan Science Fair, in which middle and high school students were introduced to the STEM fields through the development of their own experiments; and, she volunteered for the Engineering and Science Extravaganza at UTEP, in which 600 middle school students participated in an exciting day of exhibits, hands-on activities and motivational presentations. In addition, Paulina was recently named as a prestigious UTEP New Student Orientation Undergraduate Assistant performing outreach services to students and families getting introduced to the UTEP campus.

As a mechanical engineer, Paulina hopes to use her knowledge and skills to design and engineer innovative machines and tools in the automotive or aerospace industries, creating more efficient products and technologies and contributing to society.

Paulina is a 2012 HENAAC-Cummins scholarship recipient.
